Mario Kart Wii ranting. How does it work?

I have come first in the online competition a few times now. And in most of those cases the player that has come 2nd has been awarded more points than me. None of them were using the wii wheel either. So I was just wondering how the points are awarded?Mario Kart Wii ranting. How does it work?
i think it also has something to do with the kind of help u get during the race from the jewels , like the big bullet for example

I know you can be on the winning team and but near the bottom but the loser at the top of the losing team gets more points??? You get more points the more people who play as well, i've played with about 4-5 people and the top points were +50 compaired with 180 for a full game of 12 people.

im pretty sure that it depends on how many games you've played compared to the other players
